SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Aug. 23, 2019) – Beach Treat and Oscar Macias earned their second straight win Friday, Aug. 23, picking up the title in the 11th running of the $86,600 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic at Indiana Grand. The duo stopped the timer in :19.872 seconds, giving the four-year-old his fourth win in seven starts for 2019.
Starting from post seven in the 10-horse lineup, Beach Treat was in the thick of the battle from the start. The Escondido Beach gelding matched Beach Bum Eddie and L.D. Martinez and American Purr and Giovani Vazquez-Gomez stride for stride in the early stages of the 400-yard dash. As the race came to a close, Beach Treat and Beach Bum Eddie continued the battle with Stinkin Rich and Shanley Jackson also getting involved in the race for the win. At the end, it was Beach Treat as the winner by a neck over Stinkin Rich, who got a head in front of Beach Bum Eddie in the final stride.
Owned and trained by Ron Brown, Beach Treat was a bit of surprise for racing fans, paying $16.40, $8.40 and $4.60 across the board for the win. The Indiana sired sorrel gelding now has in excess of $119,000 in career earnings. The win in the Woodard Memorial also marked his first career stakes victory.
“This horse (Beach Treat) deserved it,” said Brown in a post race interview with Rachel McLaughlin, on-air racing analyst at Indiana Grand. “Three-quarters of his wins have been in trials. He just couldn’t put two races together to win the final. He’s been doing very well, and I’m happy for him he got this win tonight.”
The win with Beach Treat marked the second title for Brown in the Woodard Memorial. Brown also connected in the 2015 edition of the race with Pistolpacking Pepsi. It was also the second win on the card for Brown. He won the third race earlier in the day with Muny Me Too during the Thoroughbred racing portion of the program.
