SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Dec. 2, 2020) – Especially during current times with so much uncertainty associated with the health and well-being of individuals, it is important to Indiana Grand Racing & Casino to step up and assist as much as they can. As a result, the company recently provided a $5,000 donation to the Cancer Association of Shelby County.

The Cancer Association of Shelby County, located in downtown Shelbyville, provides much needed assistance to patients who are currently battling the disease. The organization helps with all types of costs, including transportation, medical bills, and human services. Because of shutdowns and limitations placed on organizations such as the Cancer Association of Shelby County, the need is even more amplified, and the unexpected donation was an answer to troubling times.

“Since the pandemic (COVID-19), some of our patients have become homeless, so the need is even greater right now,” said Donna Harrell, executive director of the Cancer Association of Shelby County. “We feel like we have to close our store until January because of the growing concern over the spread of the virus. This donation will offset the income we will lose during this down time.”

The Cancer Association of Shelby County has one major fundraiser each year. In 2019, Cancer Bash brought in nearly $27,000, but due to restraints this year, their online fundraiser only generated $9,000.

“We’ve been as creative as much as we can,” noted Lucinda Franklin vice president of the board. “It’s just very difficult to reach our levels of fundraising this year. This donation comes at a great time and we are elated to receive it.”

The donation to the Cancer Association of Shelby County was made during a special presentation to Harrell and Franklin at Indiana Grand. The donation is part of a year-end initiative to give back to the local community. Making the presentation from Indiana Grand included Lindsay Fish, director of sales and business development, and Elena Lisle, vice president of marketing.

“We have many team members that have battled cancer in the past or are currently dealing with the disease,” said Elena Lisle, vice president of marketing. “We have recently lost a few fellow team members to cancer, and the impact of losing a loved one is a tremendous blow to any family, including a work family. Being able to step up and provide any assistance is so important and we are glad to help out in any way we can.”

To join the fight against cancer and provide relief to those currently dealing with the disease, consider a donation to the Cancer Association of Shelby County. More information is provided on the organization’s website at www.cancerassociationofshelbycountyindiana.org.
