SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Saturday, July 2, 2022) – David Zebrowski reeled in a whopper Saturday, July 2 to win the second annual Fishing Derby held at Horseshoe Indianapolis. A total of 95 people participated in the event that took place following the 16-race Quarter Horse program.
Zebrowski was quick to take the lead as he snagged a catfish, weighing in at 4.94 pounds. The fish was the biggest catch both this year and last year in the free competition open to the public.
“I caught that fish in the first 10 minutes of the contest,” said Zebrowski, who does automobile body work and paint as his career. “At the time, I was using bait mainly for catfish. This is the first time I’ve been in this contest, but I fish a lot. As much as I can. It’s definitely the biggest catfish I’ve ever caught.”
Following closely behind in second was a bass caught by Michael Bailey, also of Indianapolis, that weighed in at 4.72 pounds. Bailey finished third in last year’s event, also pulling in a bass that weighed under four pounds.
The third largest fish was caught by Emmanuel Cosme, who also caught a bass weighing in at 3.02 pounds. Cosme, a former jockey in Indiana, is now an exercise rider and was the rider aboard California Angel last year from the George Leonard III barn in their campaign that took them all the way to the Breeders Cup.
Zebrowski took home a trophy and $250 in cash for his win. Bailey picked up $150 while Cosme was awarded $100.
