SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Sept. 20, 2019) – George Leonard III, longtime trainer in the state of Indiana, recorded his 500th career win Friday, Sept. 20 at Indiana Grand. Leonard watched as his horse Wildcard Prado took over in the stretch and rallied home as the winner in the seventh race of the day. Orlando Mojica was aboard for the milestone.
“I came up to Indiana from Louisiana in 1996 and I’ve been racing here since that time,” said Leonard, a native of Elton, Louisiana. “I’ve been very blessed to have very good horses and very good owners during that time to help me get to this point.”
The win with Wildcard Prado was the ninth of the year for Leonard at Indiana Grand. Horses from his barn have won at a 31 percent average this season and racked up in excess of $221,000.
Leonard co-owns Wildcard Prado with House Thoroughbreds. The five-year-old Indiana bred son of Fort Prado, which was bred by House Thoroughbreds, recorded his first win of 2019 in the race.
Leonard, who has been a top 10 trainer at both Indiana Grand and Hoosier Park in past years, is currently ranked among the top 20 trainers at Indiana Grand. Horses from his barn have won 126 races and pulled in more than $2 million dollars over the past 17 years of competition at Indiana Grand.
