SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Oct. 19, 2019) – The Robert Gorham Stable got an added show of appreciation Saturday, Oct. 19 as their stable was named “Barn Crew of the Month” for October. The honor was presented to them by the Indiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) and Texas Corral of Shelbyville, Ind.
“I have a good foreman and an excellent crew,” said Gorham, a native of Hastings, Mich. “They know the horses and take excellent care of them. They are irreplaceable.”
The Gorham Stable in Indiana consists of 26 horses stabled at Indiana Grand. Members of the crew include Luis, Jesus, Juan and Gambino. Gorham splits his time between his horses at Indiana Grand and his string at Thistledown near Cleveland, Ohio, so having reliable help to oversee Indiana operations is key for the success of the stable.
Gorham is a graduate of Michigan State University’s veterinary school. After graduation in 1977, he opened a small animal practice in Kalamazoo, Mich. And ventured toward Thoroughbred racing in the mid-1990s. To date, the Graded Stakes placed trainer has 1,757 career wins and horses from his stable have earned in excess of $30 million. He has had numerous Indiana stakes winners, including older mare Peyton’s Pass, who has earned in excess of $329,000.
For their hard work in the barn, members of the Gorham Stable received a $200 gift certificate to Texas Corral, located on Route 9 north of Shelbyville. The team will also get a banner to display at their barn to signify their extra special care of the horses and the barn.
The award to the Gorham Stable is the final Barn Crew of the Month for 2019. The award was implemented in 2018 by the Indiana HBPA to help reward those that work so hard in the backstretch area of the track with a night out of food, fun and fellowship with their co-workers. Texas Corral has been the sponsor of the award for the past two years.
