HH CJ Shake tops Miss Roxie Little Futurity Trials

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Oct. 5, 2019) – The field is set for the upcoming $150,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity set for Saturday, Oct. 26 at Indiana Grand. A lot of talent competed in four trials to set up the final with all four trial winners leading the way for the top 10 qualifiers out of 32 starters.

The quickest trial of the night went to HH CJ Shake and Juan Marquez from the Paul Martin Stable. The two-year-old gelded son of Escondido Beach was dominant early in the 350-yard dash and crossed under the wire with an easy one and one-half length advantage in a time of :17.903. Cartels Cash Feature and Gerardo Garrido finished second over RK Elusive Lady and German Rodriguez for third.

The win was the third in a row for HH CJ Shake who is owned by Larry Carter, John Myers, Gary Brandon Bell and Rusty Hawkins. The homebred sorrel gelding, raised by Carter and Myers, is now four for six in his young career and will seek to add another stakes win to his credentials. HH CJ Shake also earned the win against many of the horses headed to the Miss Roxie Little Futurity Final in the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity in August at Indiana Grand.

The second quickest qualifier was in the final trial of four as Beach Benny and L.D. Martinez turned in an impressive one and three-quarter length win in a time of :17.982. Trained by Tony Cunningham, the Escondido Beach gelding soared to the lead from the outside under a hand ride by Martinez. BV Runaround Sue and Berkley Packer finished second over Loveherlikethat and Sammy Mendez for third.

Beach Benny is owned and bred by Pamela Brickley Hann. It was his second win in seven starts this season and he will seek to turn the tables on HH CJ Shake in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity Final as he finished a nose back in second in the QHRAI Stallion Service Auction Futurity.

Two impressive winners in the first two trials of the night hailed from the Randy Smith barn as Shakeitonthebeach and Louisiana Lover were both solid winners. Shakeitonthebeach, ridden by Jose Beltran held on gamely for the three-quarter length win in :17.989. Louisiana Lover, ridden by Berkley Packer, defended his spot on top at the finish by a neck in :18.008.

Shakeitonthebeach is by Escondido Beach while Louisiana Lover is by The Louisiana Cartel. It was the fourth win in six starts for the gelding, who is owned by Chris Duke and Jack Laugle’s Dula Racing LLC.

“Duke’s (Chris and Raymond) have a way of looking at a horse and knowing they can run,” said Smith of Louisiana Lover. “I’m pleased with the way he ran tonight. He will stay right here at the track until the final. We don’t want to take a chance of hauling in and out and him getting hurt. We’ll do a whole lot of rubbing on him.”

The entire field for the Miss Roxie Little Futurity Final, in qualifying order with jockey and time, includes: HH CJ Shake (Juan Marquez, :17.903); Beach Benny (L.D. Martinez, :17.982); Shakeitonthebeach (Jose Beltran, :17.989); Louisiana Lover (Berkley Packer, :18.008); PYC Fast Girls Rock (Gerardo Garrido, :18.059); Jess Leavin Corona (Natasha Fritz, :18.089); Cartels Cash Feature (Gerardo Garrido, :18.119); Jess A Flyin Beach (L.D. Martinez, :18.134); Blue Eyed Newman (Berkley Packer, :18.143); and Kissmelikethat (Jose Beltran, :18.227). Smith will saddle three for the final (Shakeitonthebeach, Louisiana Lover and Blue Eyed Newman). Tim Eggleston will also saddle three in the final (PYC Fast Girls Rock, Jess Leavin Corona, and Cartels Cash Feature). Cunningham has two for the final, Beach Benny and Jess A Flyin Beach.
