SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Oct. 3, 2019) – Ten of the state’s top Indiana bred older horses will face off in the 23rd running of the $83,300 Hoosier Park Classic. The race, which originated during the inaugural season of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in 1997 at Hoosier Park, is the oldest state bred race for the sprinters in the state and joins the Governor’s Stakes and the QHRAI Derby as the oldest stakes overall for Quarter Horses.
Collectively, the field for the Hoosier Park Classic has won 82 races and accumulated earnings of more than $2.2 million, which makes for a competitive field and a nightmare for any handicapper to select a winner. But the oddsmaker at Indiana Grand has chosen Beach Treat as the early morning line favorite at odds of 7-2.
Hailing from the Ron Brown Stable, Beach Treat has won four of seven starts this season, including his last two outings. The Escondido Beach four-year-old gelding has been tough all season and defeated a similar group in his last start, which was the $86,600 Bob Woodard Memorial Classic. Beach Treat starts from post seven with regular rider Oscar Macias aboard.
Two-time defending champion Stinkin Rich will seek to turn the tables on Beach Treat. The striking grey son of One Famous Eagle finished second to his foe in the Woodard Memorial by a neck and is seeking to rebound and earn his first win of 2019 in his fourth start. Owned and bred by Carolyn Bruce of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Stinkin Rich holds the title as Indiana’s all-time richest Quarter Horse with more than $525,000 in earnings. Matt Frazier trains the seven-year-old gelding, who will be ridden by Shanley Jackson from post five at odds of 4-1.
Beach Bum Eddie was third in his last start to Beach Treat and Stinkin Rich and will begin his journey from post one. Owned and trained by Tony Cunningham, the six-year-old Escondido Beach gelding has two wins in four starts this year. He begins from post one at odds of 4-1 as the third choice on the morning line.
The entire field for the Hoosier Park Classic, in post position order with jockey and odds, includes: Beach Bum Eddie (L.D. Martinez, 4-1); HQH Fancy Pants (Gerardo Garrido, 30-1); Beach Mercedes (Samuel Mendez, 12-1); Rockys Candy Shop (Jose Beltran, 12-1); Stinkin Rich (Shanley Jackson, 4-1); American Purr (Giovani Vazquez-Gomez, 30-1); Beach Treat (Oscar Macias, 7-2); Beach Cartel (Berkley Packer, 9-2); Be Afraid (Sergio Ramirez, 5-1); and WH Kenny G (Natasha Fritz, 12-1). Estimated post time for the Hoosier Park Classic is 6 p.m. EST.
