SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Aug. 21, 2019) – Backstretch Supplies continued with “Groom of the Week” Saturday, Aug. 17. This week’s recipient was Jesus Bahena of the Genaro Garcia Stable.
A native of Mexico, Bahena has several family members involved in horse racing. He has been a groom for nearly two years, starting his career last year with Garcia at Indiana Grand. He will go with Garcia’s Stable to Arkansas to Oaklawn Park this winter and plans to return to Indiana Grand next spring.
Bahena enjoys his job as a groom for the Garcia Stable, and although he gives equal care to all his horses, he has a favorite. Augie, the now four-year-old Kentucky-bred son of Twirling Candy, has finished second in his last two starts at Indiana Grand. In all nine of his starts this season, he has not finished worse than third.
“He (Augie) is just a nice beautiful horse,” said Bahena. “I like to work with him in the barn. He’s just a nice horse to be around.”
Bahena received a $100 bill from Backstretch Supplies, located on the backstretch at Indiana Grand. Steve Cahill, clerk of scales, represented Backstretch Supplies for the presentation during the racing program. Rachel McLaughlin, on-air racing analyst for Indiana Grand, conducted the ceremony.
Backstretch Supplies will offer two more “Groom of the Week” awards for caretakers at Indiana Grand. The award is based on grooms who take extra care of their horses and work to be presentable while bringing their horses up to the paddock during the racing programs at Indiana Grand.
Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Wednesday, Nov. 6. Racing is conducted Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 2:15 p.m. and Saturday at 6:15 p.m. More information about the season is available at www.indianagrand.com.
