SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (July 24, 2019) – There were many people excited to see Mr. Money and Gabe Saez cross the finish line first in the 25th running of the Grade III $500,000-guaranteed Indiana Derby Saturday, July 13. However, one racing fan had a little more incentive to be excited. Kenneth Thompson of Indianapolis had a $2,500 Megabet riding along with Saez on Mr. Money winning Indiana’s richest horse race.

Thompson was the recipient of a $2,500 Megabet drawing for Indiana Derby Night in honor of the 25th year of the event. After a few minutes of contemplating the race page and consulting with his wife, Thompson opted to go with race favorite Mr. Money as his choice for the win wager.

“I always look at the racing form and the computer to make my picks and leading up to the Derby, I was about even for the night,” said Thompson, who comes to the races about once a week during the season. “Of course, I had to consult with the ‘boss’ (his wife) first before I made my final pick.”

Thompson was rewarded for his choice as Mr. Money strode away from the field in the stretch and rolled home the winner to give Thompson the biggest racing pay day at Indiana Grand, collecting $4,750 on the win.

“I was feeling pretty good and it was unbelievable,” said Thompson referring to watching Mr. Money in the Derby. “When I saw him winning coming down the stretch, I started screaming and dancing, like I’d had four cups of coffee. I’ll have to give credit to my wife because she made the final decision to pick him.”

The Thompsons plan to use the money on a vacation and on the grandkids. It will definitely be an Indiana Derby they remember for a long time.
