New Pal's Jim Leisure wins Caesars Stakes Legends Contest

SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (May 24, 2022) – Jim Leisure bested a field of 170 players to win the $2,500 Caesars Stakes Legends Handicapping Contest Wednesday, May 18. Leisure, who is a regular player at Horseshoe Indianapolis, took home the top prize of $1,000 in the contest sponsored by the Indiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA), who provided the contest money for the event.

Retired from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department after serving 33 years on the force, Leisure selected longshot Mansfield Tiger in the third leg of the contest, which catapulted him to the top of the leaderboard. Overall, Leisure had three winners in six races with a second and third added in.

“I’m a math guy and I break the fractions and odds down to come up with the best four horses in a race,” explained Leisure. “I actually had that seven (Mansfield Tiger) as the best horse in the race with my system.”

Leisure noted he always sticks with his system, and even though it sometimes doesn’t pay off, it does bring him rewards in the contests a majority of the time. The win in the Caesars Stakes Legends Handicapping Contest was his biggest of the year thus far, but it’s the third time he has topped the leaderboard this season in various contests.

“The main thing is to develop a system and stick with it,” added Leisure. Leisure also had Rich Strike, the longshot winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby by using his system.

Leisure is a longtime resident and graduate of New Palestine High School. He served on the coaching staff over the span of 26 years at several high schools, including Chatard, Mt. Vernon and New Palestine High Schools. Since retirement, the Ball State graduate serves as a broadcaster for high school sports on NineStar Connect TV and teaches Driver’s Education out of Old National Road Driving Institute of Greenfield, Ind. He also enjoys following horse racing and attends the races frequently with his friends, Van R. Bush, and Kent Brosier, both life-long friends and fellow sports enthusiasts from the New Pal area.
