SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Oct. 26, 2019) – Beach Treat and Oscar Macias didn’t need any tricks to score the win in the seventh running of the $85,960 Indiana Championships Saturday, Oct. 26 at Indiana Grand. The duo covered the 440-yard dash by treating the fans to a strong performance for their sixth win of 2019, equaling the record for most wins in one season set by Beach Cartel during the 2015 meet.
In a race speckled with five grey horses in the nine-horse field, it was the four-year-old sorrel gelding Beach Treat that was in contention early out of the gate with heavily favored Country Boy 123 and L.D. Martinez to his outside. A wall of horses came charging down the track and Stinkin Rich with Shanley Jackson had a slight advantage early. In the final strides, Beach Treat stepped up to score the win, just a nose ahead of Flight to La Jolla and Giovanni Vazquez-Gomez at the wire. Accountability and Sergio Ramirez finished another nose back in third in a tight photo with Country Boy 123.
The time of the race was :22.319 seconds over the wet, sloppy racing surface going into a head wind of 17 miles per hour. It was the first year the stakes race has been contested at 440 yards with the previous six seasons running at 400 yards.
Owned and trained by Ron Brown, Beach Treat now has nine career wins in 24 career starts. The Escondido Beach gelding has had a tremendous year this season with the Indiana Championships his third stakes win of the season, all recorded with Macias aboard.
“It’s just great,” said Brown. “I really didn’t think he could outrun the nine (Country Boy 123), so I was a bit surprised. This is just a lot of fun.”
Beach Treat now has in excess of $200,000 on his card. The Indiana sired gelding was a private purchase from Coronet Farm by Brown as a yearling.
