SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Nov. 19, 2020) – Strong Tide had an exceptional year for the Mike Lauer Stable. The three-year-old English Channel colt won four of 10 starts for the year with purses of $197,000 to be named 2020 Leading Horse of the Year at Indiana Grand, presented by the Indiana Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA).
Owned and bred by Mike and his wife, Penny, Strong Tide won three stakes during the season. Bred for the turf, his first two stakes were on the grass in the $75,000 Snack Stakes and the $75,000 AJ Foyt Stakes. He came back to show his versatility Tuesday, Nov. 17 to win the $100,000 To Much Coffee Stakes and seal the title for winningest horse of the meet.
“He came out of his race good and he’s going to the farm for about a month,” said Lauer during the special winner’s circle presentation that included a blanket courtesy of Indiana HBPA. “He will head south after that and we will be getting him ready for next year.”
Strong Tide is continuing the tradition of winning for the Lauers, who campaigned his mother, Dreamin Big, during her career. The multiple stakes winning mare earned more than $600,000 during her racing days and is ranked second on the list of all-time leading female Indiana breds. She is also a former track record holder at Indiana Grand on the turf.
Strong Tide was one of nine horses with four wins during the season. His purse earnings of $193,130 separated him from the pack to earn the honor as the year’s top horse. Other horses with four wins on the year included Only Reward’s, Stage Five Creeper, Abby’s Destiny, Naughty Alfred, Krunch, Bayou Cat, Boyfriend Material and Unbridled Beast.
