A total of 10 Quarter Horse Training Races were held at Indiana Grand Thursday, April 15. Among the horses entered, nine of the races were dedicated to two-year-olds, giving horsemen and fans a first peek at the talent awaiting the 2021 racing season.
One of the standouts for the day was Count Down from the Tony Cunningham barn in the sixth race. The freshman filly by Ivory James led the 200-yard sprint from gate to wire with L.D. Martinez aboard.
Cunningham and Martinez have teamed up thus far in two days of action, winning both Quarter Horse races. The duo connected with Beach Shakin on the season opener followed by a win from CC Moonflash on Wednesday, April 14. Both horses are owned by Pamela Hann, who co-owns Beach Shakin with her husband Daniel under Fasttrac Racing.
Another two-year-old looking good in her training race was Botticelli Beach from the Claudio Barraza barn. The Escondido Beach filly stumbled out of the gate, nearly dropping to her knee and regrouped to power forward and cross the line in front of the field. Barraza also owns the Indiana sired grey filly.
Quarter Horse Training Races are set for the next two Thursdays at Indiana Grand. The sessions will begin at 11:30 a.m. with entries into the event due to the Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana on the Tuesday prior to each event.
