SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Sept. 26, 2019) – Valiantinecandyrocks and Jose Beltran will be ready to roll when the gate opens for the 11th running of the $116,800 Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes set for Saturday, Sept. 28 at Indiana Grand. The race, scheduled as the ninth on the card, will have an estimated post time of 10 p.m.
Valiantinecandyrocks, the quickest qualifier from the trials, will begin her journey from post three. The Valiant Hero filly, who is a half-sister to Indiana bred standout Rockys Candy Shop, has won her last two starts. Trained by John McCreary, Valiantinecandyrocks is owned by breeders Tammy and Lance Finlinson of Greenwood, Ind. She has been selected as the early morning line favorite at odds of 5-2.
The second choice on the morning line was the runner up to Valiantinecandyrocks as Abe and Uriel Cervantes will look for their first win of 2019. The Jazz Be First son will start from post five at odds of 9-2 for breeder-owner-trainer Randy Thompson, who selected the name when the horse was born on Abraham Lincoln’s birthday.
The other trial winner, One Smart Jess, who also hails from the McCreary barn, will start from post eight at odds of 8-1. The One Sweet Jess gelding, who was a stakes winner last year at two, will pick up the services of jockey Juan Marquez for the first time since Beltran will be aboard Valiantinecandyrocks.
