SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (Saturday, Oct. 22, 2022) – What Else is New pretty well sums up the winning tradition of Trainer Randy Smith. The track’s all-time leading Quarter Horse trainer and holder of numerous training records scored his third win of the night with What Else is New in the $35,000 Horseshoe Juvenile Stakes. The colt broke his maiden in the effort with Juan Marquez aboard for the ride.
What Else is New broke strong from the inside and inched forward early on to battle with Three X a Ladie and L.D. Martinez for the early lead. Midway through the 350-yard dash, the Lota PYC colt took over and held on gamely for the win by a head over the fast-closing Rogues Last Game and Jose Ruiz. This Ladys On Fire and Francisco Quintero finished another neck back in third in the four-horse photo. The time of the dash was :18.224 seconds.
What Else is New was making his fifth career start and had yet to hit the board. He paid $8.20 for his efforts in the Horseshoe Juvenile Stakes. Steve Whiting’s Whiting Ranch bred and owns the Oklahoma bred, who now has more than $25,000 on his card.
“I’ve had a lot of Lota PYCs and they can be a little difficult to deal with,” said Smith. “But they always have a lot of talent.”
Smith now has 70 wins on the year and is on track to break his own record of most wins in one season. Last season, Smith scored 73 wins. The Challenge Championship night added another record to his credentials as he topped his own record of most purse earnings in one season. He now has more than $1.9 million this year to establish a new record. It was the 14th stakes win of the year for the eight-time leading trainer at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
The win also marked a new record for Marquez, who has set many milestones this season, including most wins on one program (6) and most wins by a Quarter Horse jockey in one season (47). Marquez is the first jockey in history to top $1 million in earnings in one season. The victory was the 8th of the season for Marquez, also a record.
